First is to make sure your website is properly mappedout inorder to guide your users towards the information they want and the business goals you desire. Avoid colors that are in the same color orange especially between your buttons and your banners or backgrounds.
Readability
Remember that you are serving a wide array of website users, both young and old will be visiting your site. So make sure you have fonts that do not need a microscope in order to be read. Stay away from fonts that are as elegant as Old Gothic yet almost unreadable to anyone. Part of your objective is to send a message across your computer screen to the readers so keep it sweet and simple.
Consistency
A human being is a creature of habit, so if your images and galleries appear in specific areas of your paragraph then keep at it. Font colors especially links that have been visited should retain a separate color from those links thathaven’t been clicked on yet. Make them uniform across your entire website, don’t hide vital information and make them appear only when a visitor clicks on something first. Although hiding things and having them appear works with main and sub menus, they don’t works on vital sales critical information.

The success of the Internet is based on humans desire to know, and nothing beats the search engines and the Internets capabilities in serving that. Even if your website has the most beautiful layout design, your visitors wouldn’t stay there forever. But if you package a beautiful web design and resource rich content website, then you have what is called an engaging website.
Cross Browser Capability
Lastly, never forget that your website serves a global market. You cannot expect people to be running on high-end computers with the most up to date web browsers. Develop your websites with backwards compatibility in each browser and cross browser capability. You don’t really want to believe Microsoft publicity that everyone is using a Windows running computer and Internet Explorer as its browser. So test your site and test again using multiple systems.
